SDA Has Built 7 SWRO Plants in Thousand Islands

Jakarta Water Resources (SDA) Agency has built seven Water Treatment Plants (IPAs) with Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) technology in Thousand Islands. Seven SWRO Plants can now be used to meet residents need of clean water in eight residential islands.
This year we will build SWRO Plant on Sebira Island with capacity 1.5 liters per second
Jakarta SDA Agency's Geology, Raw Water Conservation, and Clean Water Supply Division Head, Ahmad Saipul said seven SWRO Plants that have been operating are located on Panggang Island, Pramuka Island, Payung Island, Kelapa Dua Island, Kelapa Island (it also serves Harapan Island), Lancang Island, and Tidung Island.
"This year we will build SWRO Plant on Sebira Island with capacity 1.5 liters per second," he added, Tuesday (5/10).

"IPA with SWRO technology uses special membrane that can filter high salt content in seawater," he added.
According to him, before SWRO was built, Thousand Islands residents used groundwater and rainfed water for their main water sources. Most people use bottled drinking water from IPA with Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis (BWRO) system which built by Jakarta Public Works Agency at that time to meet resident's need for drinking water.
Groundwater is mostly brackish and it reduces significantly during dry season. Thus Thousand Islands residents often have difficulties in getting clean water sources. In addition, excessive use of groundwater can lead to saltwater intrusion and land subsidence.
"After researching and planning, Jakarta SDA Agency builds IPA with SWRO technology in Thousand Islands, where 4 SWRO Plants are built in 2018 and 3 others in 2019," he mentioned.
Related to service scheme, clean water which produced from SWRO Plant is distributed to residents' houses through distribution pipes. Amount of water used by residents is known through water meter installed in each residents' houses.
"After construction is complete, PAM Jaya will manage SWRO Plant," he stated.
Here are detailed information about each SWRO Plant's capacity and service coverage;
1. Panggang Island SWRO Plant with capacity 3 liters per second and service coverage of 2,000 house connections (SR).
2. Pramuka Island SWRO Plant with capacity 1.5 liters per second and service coverage of 401 SR.
3. Payung Island SWRO Plant with capacity 0.25 liter per second and service coverage of 49 SR.
4. Kelapa Dua Island SWRO Plant with capacity 0.25 liters per second and service coverage of 111 SR.
5. Kelapa-Harapan Islands SWRO Plant with capacity 5 liters per second and service coverage of 7,409 SR.
6. Lancang Island SWRO Plant with capacity 1.5 liters per second and service coverage of 700 SR.
7. Tidung Island SWRO Plant with capacity 3 liters per second and service coverage of 2,500 SR.
